Joe Strummer Day 2017

CJAM’s 8th Annual Joe Strummer Day to Confront Poverty in Windsor-Detroit and 16th anniversary of Joe Strummer’s passing strives to aid in the “prevention or relief of poverty, particularly of young people, anywhere in the world by providing: grants, items and services to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty,” on December 22nd with 24 hours of musicology, journalism, criticisms and solutions (From the Joe Strummer Foundation objectives).

Starting at midnight on the 16th anniversary of Strummer’s death, CJAM will again dedicate 24-hours to the cause, and that’s where CJAM’s great programmers come in. All regular programming will be pre-empted while our musicologists, activists, and journalists work together to get the world to listen to poverty and homelessness issues. MIDNIGHT – 2AM: MARATHON KICKOFF
Join Brady & Carley (CJAM FM’s Station Manager & Program Director) as they kick off Joe Strummer Day with a mix of rare Joe Strummer tracks and information about what CJAM FM has in store this year!

2AM – 4AM: REVOLUTION ROCK PRESENTS TYMON DOGG
Dave Konstantino (host of Revolution Rock) interviews Tymon Dogg; mentor, fellow musician, and friend of Joe Strummer on teaching Joe how to play guitar right handed, Tymons time in Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, and the state of the world today. The show will also feature a selection of recordings from Tymon Dogg and music from The Mescaleros, alongside other projects.

4AM – 4:30AM: HOW BAD IS BAD?
Carley interviews The 30 News (University of Windsor digital journalism students) speak about their recent documentary focusing on poverty in the Windsor area.

4:30AM – 6AM: THE DEADLY SYNTH
Adam D’Andrea will be focusing in on music from later in The Clash’s career (Sandinista, Combat Rock, and Cut the Crap) that utilizes keyboard, synthesizer, and other elements associated with New Wave/Synth. The Program will also feature music from Joe Strummer’s solo career that falls into the same category.

6AM – 8AM: COVERS CALLING
Join your host Dan as he presents fantastic covers to re-create the London Calling (1979) album track by track, and also feature covers of classic tracks from Clash albums like The Clash (1977), Give ‘Em Enough Rope (1978), and Combat Rock (1982). A few of the bands featured include: The Accelerators, Jimmy Cliff, Secret Popstars, Rachid Taha, and many more!

8AM – 10AM: POSITIVE AMPLITUDE
Mr. T (host of Positive Amplitude) speaks with Jediah Bell of Street Medicine Detroit, Reverend Faith Fowler of Cass Community Services & published author, and Carriage Town Ministries in Flint MI.

10AM – 11AM: HANDI-LINK: POVERTY & DISABILITY
Cam Wells (host of Handi-Link) discusses poverty issues within the disability community with a variety of different interviewees 

11AM – 1PM: THIS IS RADIO CLASH
Get informed on everything that’s happened on Joe Strummer Day so far with host Brady, as well as a look forward to the rest of the day’s programming. Not to mention, rare cuts from the Strummer catalog!

1PM – 2PM: EVERYTHING’S NO GOOD: THE 101’ers
Carley (host of Everything’s No Good) highlights Joe Strummer’s first band, The 101’ers with music from their compilation release Elgin Avenue Breakdown (originally released in 1981)

2PM – 3PM: RUMMAGE RADIO // GUITAR ARMY
Lauren Hedges presents Guitar Army, recorded live in CJAM studios!

3PM – 3:30PM: CHRIS CROSSROADS 
Join Dave Konstantino (host of Revolution Rock) for a special interview with musician Chris Crossroads, who has performed music all over Canada and busked everywhere from Windsor to Winnipeg. They will discuss issues of poverty & poverty prevention from a different perspective alongside some original tracks recorded live at CJAM studios.

3:30PM – 4PM: COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS
Carley (host of Everything’s No Good) speaks with Veronika Scott of Empowerment Plan Detroit & Nikodem of WeStudents uWindsor.

4PM – 5PM: REGGAE CLASH
Cleo SP (Host of The Beat Junkie Show) explores the reggae influence of The Clash and focuses on the reggae & dub versions of Clash songs, as well as original tracks that were covered by The Clash.

5PM – 6PM: NO SCRUBS: HEALTH AND POVERTY
Farah and Emmerson (hosts of No Scrubs) break down the complexities between health and poverty. They speak with Tamara, of the Windsor Youth Centre, Dennis, a fellow nursing student and volunteer at the University of Windsor Peer Support Centre, Robyn of the Mental Health and Wellness Promotion Program, and Sandy of the Iona College Food Bank. 

6PM – 8PM: CLASH RARITIES & ODDITIES WITH WILLY WILSON
Join Willy Wilson (host of The Motor City is Burning & Friday’s at the Hideout) for some very rare Joe Strummer related material. Willy has been digging through his archives for interviews with Joe, as well as unreleased recordings from The Clash and other Strummer projects.

8PM – 10PM: REVROCK PRESENTS JOE STRUMMER & THE LATINO ROCKABILLY WAR
Following his time with The Clash, Joe Strummer worked on a variety of soundtracks, most notably for the Alex Cox films, Sid & Nancy and Walker. The Latino Rockabilly War was the backing band Strummer put together for music on the film Permanent Record, which starred Keanu Reeves. The band consisted of Zander Schloss (guitar), Lonnie Marshall (bass), Jack Irons (drums) as well as Willie McNeil on drums for select tracks. Five songs recorded during this time were featured on the Permanent Record soundtrack, Trash City, Baby the Trans, Nothin’ Bout Nothin‘, Nefertiti Rock, and the instrumental track Theme from Permanent Record.

This line-up was also featured on the Earthquake Weather, Joe Strummer’s first official solo album. Released in 1989, the album was initially not received well critically, but that has come to change with time, garnering more of a cult following. Earthquake Weather experiments with the influences of rockabilly, folk, funk, reggae, world music, and pop music. Many feel this album is an early incarnation of the sound the Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros would bring forth a decade later. The Latino Rockabilly War also toured with Strummer as his backing band for his Rock Against the Rich tour in 1988/1989. This episode will feature music from Earthquake Weather, songs from the Permanent Record soundtrack, some live recordings, and B-sides from this period.

10PM – 11PM: JOE STRUMMER &THE LATINO ROCKABILLY WAR LIVE
CJAM FM presents a rare live performance by Joe Strummer &the Latino Rockabilly War. Recorded on June 23, 1988 at The Fridge in Brixton. This will be presented uninterrupted, as if you were there yourself to hear the live show. A perfect compliment to the Revolution Rock special preceding it.

11PM – MIDNIGHT: JOE STRUMMER DAY CLOSER
Station Manager Brady and Program Director Carley return to close out the 24-hour marathon to feature nothing but Clash B-Sides from their single releases over the years.
