Bilal Nasser – “Who We Used To Be”
Ambient / Post-classical • Windsor, ON • @bilalguitar
The first track from Bilal Nasser’s forthcoming album (out November 6th) showcases Nasser’s gorgeously delicate singing and assured songwriting. It blends fingerpicked guitar with organically evolving arrangements full of harmonic and textural detail, carried by an ebb and flow of strings, horns, piano and electronics. He’ll play a highly anticipated hometown release show on November 6th at Meteor, bringing his compositions to life on stage with a full ensemble. This track is a gradually unfolding masterpiece that demands your patience and a well-attuned ear, and it’s just as rewarding on the tenth listen as on the first. We can’t wait to hear what else Bilal has in store for us on Every Martyr Is a Universe.
R. Solomon – “Having To Learn”
Electronic / Synth Pop • Detroit, MI • @r.solomon_______
R. Solomon is the dreamy synth-pop project of Detroit’s Nicholas Sapounas, a classically trained vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer who has been recording and composing since 2011. R. Solomon is his latest project, launched in 2023.
Gnome Chimpsky – “Django’s Surfboard”
Beachy Alt-Rock • Windsor, ON • @gnomechimpsky
Windsor alt-rock band Gnome Chimpsky range from beachy indie-reggae to heavier psychedelic jams. “Django’s Surfboard” pushes that range even further. It’s an instrumental epic clocking in at over five minutes, drawing on surf music, spaghetti western soundtracks, garage rock, flamenco, Arabic music, gypsy jazz and more. The title nods to Sergio Corbucci’s Django films (and Tarantino’s later take on them), as well as to legendary French jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. The track was recorded at SLR Studios and released September 21st, with artwork by longtime CJAM friend Greg Maxwell, who (no surprise here) knocked it out of the park. It’s rare that a single gets such a treatment, and it’s a testament to the care and quality the band puts into their music.
David Spade & The Noise Complaints – “Strange Winds”
Psych-Rock • Windsor, ON • @dspadenoise
“Strange Winds” is the first single from the band’s highly anticipated debut album, Songs From the Creek. Led by longtime Windsor musician Cory Basden, David Spade & The Noise Complaints have been performing around town for several years. Their shows are always more than an auditory experience, usually featuring Basden’s handmade, colourful visuals (AKA Hermetic Light Show) projected over the band. They are seriously psychedelic, and the track is seriously groovy. It’s a good indication of what’s to come…
Rough Shape – “Good Night Sleep”
Loud • Windsor, ON • @rough.shape
Rough Shape brings together four seasoned Windsor musicians with roots in punk, hardcore, tech-metal, ska and post-punk. The result is a heavy dose of bone-crushing guitars, heart-pounding bass and bombastic drums. On “Good Night Sleep,” they’re singing and yelling about life’s ups and downs, and the genre tag says it all: this one is loud.
Polar Baron – “Nighthawk”
Electronic / Synthwave • Windsor, ON
The mysterious Polar Baron is a Windsor synthwave and retrowave project from the former bassist of avant-garde pop group Alpha Strategy. “Nighthawk” is 1980s-inspired, retro-futuristic electronic music that conjures neon-lit streets and a synth-driven landscape. It’s perfect for a late-night drive.
Mitchy Blooms – “On & On”
House / Electronic • Windsor, ON • @mitchyblooms
For his recent single, Windsor electronic and house producer Ryan Lewis AKA Mitchy Blooms remixes Erykah Badu’s classic 1997 track. This slightly sped-up version is undeniably funky and irresistibly danceable.
Semi-Automatic – “Get Out of My Way”
Hard Rock • Hazel Park, MI • @semiautomaticmusic
Spud Toney is the frontman and creative engine behind Detroit hard rock outfit Semi-Automatic, and “Get Out of My Way” brings a heavy, unpolished Detroit Rock City energy. It’s the sixth track from his upcoming debut album, Straight Outta Hazel Park. The record rejects modern studio tropes in favour of vintage tube-driven production, raw guitar riffs and songs about the working class. Toney has also earned the official mentorship of legendary Detroit radio icon Doug Podell, the “Doc of Rock” from WLLZ.
Joe Duprey & Steven Shinn – “I Feel”
Prog-Rock / Soul • Detroit, MI / Los Angeles, CA • @joe_duprey_ @stevenshinn_
“I Feel” brings together Detroit’s Joe Duprey and Los Angeles-based Steven Shinn on a danceable prog-rock track with plenty of soul. Prog and dancefloor don’t often share a sentence, but the pair make the combination work. The duo gig regularly around Northern Michigan, so keep an eye out if you’re heading up north.
