CJAM 99.1 FM – Student Media/University of Windsor – is hiring for the position of BIPOC ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR. This 1-year contract position is 35 hours a week. It requires a flexible individual who is occasionally available for evening, and weekend duties when required.
About the BIPOC Engagement Coordinator position:
The BIPOC Engagement Coordinator will look to outreach and make connections with the University of Windsor campus, including student groups, faculty, and departments. They will engage the community, and make important connections with off campus groups while creating a culture of inclusivity and belonging for BIPOC within CJAM FM. They will work with the Station Manager and Board of Directors to assist in updating the language and reflect societal changes in CJAMs policies and procedures. The BIPOC Engagement Coordinator will create an external contact list for continued and future contact to inform people of volunteer opportunities, job openings, and internships. The Coordinator will host training sessions for our current volunteers on our revised policies and procedures.
While radio, and audio mediums in general, continue to be a predominately white, male-centric line of work, CJAM is aiming to center BIPOC voices, while hiring someone from within this community to do the work, and actively create lasting changes within the organization through policy creation and reform. We think it is important to not just -say- we are diversifying, but actually change our wording, image, and actions to reflect the diversity we want to see. We want to engage BIPOC communities and bring their voices to a larger audience by giving them the tools, resources, experience, and space. CJAM Staff and Board of Directors believe it is time to change the dynamic and view of CJAM FM, starting from the inside. We have yet to make a full statement about the systemic racism on the University of Windsor campus, and within our own framework. We felt there was not enough change happening within the organization to do so. This project aims to take the first steps in addressing these deep-rooted issues.
CJAM FM’s mission is to provide a voice to the under-represented, and through this project we will be able to lay the groundwork within our organization for BIPOC to be more fully represented and garner more opportunities to work in the audio world.
– Outreaching, promoting, and building partnerships with BIPOC students/groups on campus and within the larger community to foster continuity, quality, and relevance in programming and potential volunteers.
– Serving as a resource for volunteers regarding broadcasting and programming.
– Working with CJAMs Station Manager and Board of Directors to review current practices & policies, and revising our by-laws and policies, working toward our own Anti-Black Racism and Harassment policies outside of the University of Windsor.
– Working together with the Program Director, Station Manager, and other staff to create and maintain University & public outreach activities/events
– Ongoing participation in CJAM’s fall fundraising drive, Annual General Meeting & Volunteer General Meeting, board meetings (when necessary) and general staff meetings
– Creating & updating an external contact list; communicating with list members regularly
– Creating relevant public service announcements
– Regularly updating CJAM’s website with relevant news & information
– Utilizing CJAMs social media platforms to promote info sessions, or other relevant news/events
– Writing and editing for press releases, web and online promotion, and other writing as necessary
– Maintaining dedicated office hours/available work-from-home hours (as per COVID restrictions)
– Excellent interpersonal, communication & listening skills
– Experience & knowledge relating to non-commercial music, news & views
– Experience in policy writing / revision
– Strong sense of local context, including an investment in creating & maintaining community relationships
– Be able to effectively work with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, and community members, along with a history of engagement with Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour communities
– Experience with, or active interest in, anti-oppression frameworks
– Conflict resolution skills
– Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
– Management or Volunteer coordination experience an asset
– Experience in new media and journalism an asset
– Computer and basic radio/audio production skills an asset but not required
TERMS: 35 hours per week // 1-year grant contract
