14th Joe Strummer Day – Dec 22nd 2023

This Friday, December 22nd, 2023, CJAM 99.1 FM will be hosting its 14th annual Joe Strummer Day marathon for highlighting local issues relating to poverty, affordability, housing, and homelessness while pairing this mission with the songbook of The Clash, Joe Strummer and other musicians and bands who advocated for issues pertaining to human rights.

9:30 to 10:00 am – Walter interviews Sean De Four, CEO of MiSide Community Impact Detroit

10:00 to 10:30 am – Walter interviews Old Punks (Dale D’Amore, Tommy “Vomit” Shannon, Doug Green, Mike Fortier); also in-studio performance by the Old Punks.

11:30-12Cafe International with guest Anthony Russell:

On this week’s Cafe International, our guest is singer, Anthony Russell. He discusses his groundbreaking album Convergence, celebrating 100 years of African American and Ashkenazi Jewish Music. We will learn how he originally trained to become an opera singer, and what it is like as an African-American man performing Yiddish music that deals with subjects such as systemic racism and mass incarceration.

1-1:30 – Walter Interviews Frazier Fathers (M.A., M.P.P.), local consultant dealing with local policy issues impacting Windsor, Ontario on his blog Ginger Politics.

1:30-2 Walter interview with Fiona Coughlin, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Windsor Essex

2-4 – Revolution Rock 

A special two hour episode focusing on the music of Irish singer-songwriter Shane MacGowan of Celtic punk band The Pogues. Adam, Dave and guest host Kieran take you through a selection of MacGowan’s songs with The Pogues, The Nips, Shane MacGowan & The Pogues, demos and live tracks. 

4-4:30 – This Way Out

The only internationally distributed weekly LGBTQ radio program, currently airing on some 200 local community radio stations around the world. The award-winning half-hour magazine-style program features a summary of some of the major news events in or affecting the queer community (NewsWrap), in-depth coverage of major events, interviews with key queer figures, plus music, literature, entertainment — all the information and culture of a community on the move!

4:30-5 – Weajue interview with Charmaine Valbuena, Social Planning Coordinator, overseeing Pathway to Potential, City of Windsor

5-6:30 – Nite Flights Joe Strummer Day 2023 Special: 

Walt will play a selection of musicians who were played on Joe Strummer’s London Calling Radio Program on BBC Radio (1998-1999, 2000-2001), as well as playing bands who played Rock Against Racism (between 1976 to 1982) in the UK.
