Mental and physical health are important
for everyone. I find a lot of time when we talk about mental health or even
physical health there is a huge focus on women’s health. Men’s health seems to
take a back seat when we talk about this. Mental and physical health are so important,
and we need to make sure we are also putting a focus on the men when we talk
about this subject.
Mental health
Mental health is not something that chooses
who it affects just based on their gender or race. Mental health is something
that everyone will struggle with or know someone who will struggle with it
during their lifetime regardless of age, sex, race etc. When talking about
men’s mental health we need to be aware of the signs and stereotypes against
men to be able to recognize the risk factors. Men are stereotyped are strong,
independent and don’t show any emotion. When men do show emotion, they are
considered weak and unmanly. A lot of these stereotypes now a days discourage
men to talk about how they are feeling and seek help. This needs to change.
Physical health
What is the first thing that comes to mind
when you think of men being physically fit. I know myself I would think big,
strong and well-defined muscles and I feel most people would think the same.
Just like women men are “forced” by society that they must have this
unachievable image in order to fit in. They are constantly bombarded on social
media, the news, in public etc of what image they need to meet to get somewhere
in society. When you don’t meet that image, you are bullied and made fun of
resulting in poor mental health and low self-esteem. Just like for women when
we talk now a days about “body positivity” we need to do the same for men. It
doesn’t matter what you look like it’s about the person you are.
