CJAM Interviews: Ratboys Live in Ann Arbor, MI

Interview and article by Absent Sounds

On a brisk spring evening in Ann Arbor, a mere 45-minute drive from the doors of CJAM, Absent Sounds embarked on a journey to experience an ____ performance by indie rock sensations Ratboys and Ducks Ltd. at the Blind Pig. It marked my inaugural attendance at a live show by the Chicago-based band, despite being an avid follower of their music for years. Their latest album, “The Window,” produced by the endlessly talented Chris Walla, stood as one of my favorites of 2024, making the prospect of witnessing them live an absolute dream.

Upon our arrival at the venue at 7 p.m., we were greeted by none other than Julia Steiner, cofounder and lead vocalist of the band, stationed near the entrance selling merch. With a warm smile, she introduced herself, and we proceeded upstairs for our scheduled interview. For the next 20 minutes, we delved deep into the intricacies of “The Window,” discussing everything from the ambiance of Seattle in the springtime to the amusing anecdotes of tour shampoo theft. We even shared laughs over tales of playing trivia in Black Earth, Wisconsin, immersing ourselves in the essence of Ratboys’ journey and creative process.

The full interview can be enjoy through the Absent Sounds archive.
