uTalkin2Me welcomes Media City (Wed, May 23: 4pm)


BigJD welcomes Media City Film Festival Program Directors Jeremy Rigsby and Oona Mosna to the show this week. The Media City Film Festival is an annual international festival of film and video art presented in Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan since 1994. Each year the festival attracts filmmakers and audience members from around the world to participate in five days of screenings, live performances, exhibitions and artist’s discussions. Over the years the festival has achieved critical acclaim and international recognition for its “sheer excellence in programming” and is recognized as a leading venue in the world of artist’s film and video. Along with Jeremy & Oona, other guests on this show will include attending artists Nicky Hamlyn, Kevin J. Everson and UWindsor Professor Iain Baxter&.

Iain Baxter& – One of Canada’s foremost living artists, IAIN BAXTER& is recognized internationally as an early and important pioneer of conceptual art. He is Professor Emeritus at the School of Visual Arts University of Windsor, a recipient of a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts and an Officer of the Order of Canada. Until August 12, the Art Gallery of Ontario is exhibiting IAIN BAXTER&: Works 1958­2011, a major career retrospective that was also recently presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

Nicky Hamlyn – a filmmaker and writer on artists’ / experimental film and video based in Lewes, near Brighton, UK and teaches at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in Kent and Surrey, and at the Royal College of Art in London. His work has been exhibited at venues and festivals worldwide, including at six previous editions of Media City.

Kevin J. Everson – Over the past fifteen years he has completed several feature films and over fifty short films. His films and videos have been widely show at venues including Whitechapel Gallery (London), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the New York MoMA, the IIFF Rotterdam and the 15th, 16th and 17th editions of Media City. He was the subject of a recent solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum (New York), and his work was also selected to screen as part of the 2012 Whitney Biennial. He is an associate professor at the University of Virginia. With a sense of place and historical research, Kevin Jerome Everson films combine scripted and documentary moments with rich elements of formalism.
